Custom House, Glasgow
Designed by Custom’s Officer John Taylor, Custom House was opened in 1840 and was home to Imports and Exports officials collecting duties at the harbour; it also housed a Register of Ships. Latterly, it served as the Procurator Fiscal’s office.
In 2017, planning permission was secured to transform this dilapidated Grade A listed building into a four-star hotel. The original building will host bars, restaurants and conference and event facilities with most of the 300 rooms located in a new seventeen-storey extension. It will also feature a 150-bed aparthotel in a building to the east.
The restoration and refurbishment will see many of the original period features retained and the new extension will feature a terrace on the seventh floor, looking out onto the River Clyde. The buildings will be interlinked by a covered courtyard with a glazed roof.
